During this talk I will highlight how the perfusionist takes on the role of the anaesthetist during this extremely critical period of their life.
I will focus on how monitoring both cerebral oxygenation using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and depth of anaesthesia (DoA) using bispectral index (BIS) can be used to ensure that both are kept within normal physiological ranges during CPB and therefore avoid many of the adverse outcomes all to often associated with CPB. To do this I will cover the latest European guidelines on both NIRS and pEEG and go onto to show case studies to illustrate their practical use.
Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist in Basildon. I have worked in university hospitals in several countries using and researching the use of NIRS and more recently BIS during cardiac anaesthesia. I was in the founding group responsible for the introduction of TOE in cardiac practice at the time that I was President of the ACTACC for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.I like to stay active and compete in triathlons, cycling trips, skiing and sailing.
